Rousing reception for new Minister

By Our Special Correspondent

HUBLI, DEC. 19. The Minister for Small Savings and Lotteries and Science and Technology, Basavaraj S. Horatti, was given a rousing reception on his maiden visit after swearing in to his hometown on Sunday morning.

Janata Dal (S) workers, secondary school teachers and corporators gathered at Gabbur on the outskirts of Hubli.

Mr. Horatti, who came by road from Davangere, was accorded a traditional welcome by the Deputy Mayor and Janata Dal (S) leader, Fahemida Killedar.

Later, the Minister, his wife and son were taken in procession in an open jeep through the main roads of Hubli, to the accompaniment of music played by a band troupe, bursting of crackers and liberal sprinkling of gulal.

Mr Horatti did not address any meeting as expected and went to his house at Vemana Bidi near Desai Cross. Sources close to him said that Mr. Horatti, who had earlier expressed his unhappiness over the allocation of portfolios, has now reconciled to the situation and had no plans to press for a change.

This is the first time that Mr. Horatti is becoming Minister in his 25-year stint as MLC. .
