CHITRADURGA, DEC. 19. K.H. Muniyappa, Union Minister of State for Surface Transport, proposes to improve road networks in the rural areas of north Karnataka. Speaking to presspersons after attending a function at Challakere, around 30 km from here, on Sunday, he said that an action plan to improve major road networks in rural areas of north Karnataka had been approved and would be included in the next Budget. The work would begin as soon as it is approved in the Parliament, he added. He also promised to complete the proposed Golden Quadrilateral Highway project that would connect the four metropolitan cities before 2007. Mr. Muniyappa denied the allegations of the project being stalled after the Congress-led Government came to power at the centre. The project was considered to be the pet project of the National Democratic Alliance Government. He also said that the rumours regarding fund crunch as the reason behind stalling the project were false. The project was facing hiccups, which would be sorted out soon. There had been a progress of at least 70 per cent. A stretch of around 650 km of the proposed Highway had been completed, he added. He confessed that the project was supposed to be ready by the end of December this year. Land acquisition and legal problems had postponed the completion of the project. He said that the project would be ready by the end of December 2005. "I came to know that the stretch between Hiriyur and Davanagere has come to grinding halt. I will look into this lapse. I have directed officials concerned to start the work immediately. A special committee will be formed to settle differences between the contractors and the officers under the leadership of Chief Secretary of the State Government. The works will be carried out according to his directions," he said. Mr. Muniyappa expressed the hope to complete Bidar-Srirangapattana State Highway with the assistance of the World Bank well on time.
