Ramanna Ragate and other members of the Nagarika Hitarakshana Vedike have complained that life had come to a stand still due to the lack of communication facilities. Officials at the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. Complaint Cell said that change in the technology version had caused the disruption in services. They assured that telephone services would resume by Monday.

Water sought
In a letter to the chairman of the Bhadra Command Area Development Authority, R. Prasannakumar, H.R. Basavarajappa, general secretary of the sangha, has said that water can be released for 106 days for irrigation as 27 tmcft of water is available in the reservoir. He has said that farmers suffered a heavy loss as the main crops such as areca, coconut and sugarcane have given poor yields owing to inadequate release of water into the canals. The Irrigation Consultative Committee of the CADA has given its approval for the release of water from Monday.
World Telugu meet
BANGALORE Dec. 19. The sixth biennial world Telugu conference will be held at Whitefield here from December 24 to 26. J.S. Reddy, Convenor of the Conference, said that the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, would inaugurate the conference in the presence of his Karnataka counterpart, N. Dharam Singh. Besides felicitating eminent personalities from different fields, including Badminton player, Pullela Gopichand, the conference will host a literary seminar with the participation Jnanapith awardee C. Naryaana Reddy. A women's seminar will attempt to highlight the challenges women faced. It would try to promote better ties between Kannadigas and the people of Andhra Pradesh, he said.
Appointed JD(S) secretary
Bidar Dec.19. Dalit writer and senior advocate Tatyarao Kamble has been appointed Janata Dal (Secular) national general secretary. A long-time Congressman, Mr Kamble joined the Janata Dal(S) just before the byelections to the Bidar Lok Sabha seat. Basavakalyan Town Municipal Council former member Sadanand Bhosle, the Bharatiya Dalit Panthers taluk president, Ravi Gaikwad, and other Dalit leaders such as Narasingrao Kamble, Dharma Gajre have thanked the party national president, H.D. Deve Gowda for Mr. Kamble's appointment.
Wanted man dies in encounter
ANANTAPUR DEC. 19. A member of a pseudo-naxalite group, G. Neelakanta Reddy (45), was shot dead in an alleged encounter with the police near Muthyalacheruvu village in Kadiri rural mandal in the early hours of Sunday. Neelakanta Reddy belonged to Rekkamanu village of Gandlapenta mandal in the district and was allegedly involved in more than a dozen criminal cases in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, including two contract killings. He was wanted by the police of the two States, and was carrying a reward of Rs. 50,000 on him, announced by Karnataka police. According to police, as part of the operation by the district police to arrest the accused for his alleged involvement in the murder of Dalit leader of Amadaguru mandal, Boru Gangulappa, four police teams had been searching the Kadiri area since December 15. On a tip-off that two persons were taking shelter in a dilapidated temple outside Muthyalacheruvu village, a police team went to the spot around 3 a.m. today and questioned them. One of them opened two rounds of fire at the police. When the police opened fire in retaliation, one of them was killed and the other fled. The deceased was identified as Neelakanta Reddy. A country-made revolver, two bullet shells, one live bullet, a hunting sickle, Rs. 2,600 in fake currency and Rs. 160 in cash were found in his possession.
