Hidayat wins Indonesian Open

JAKARTA, DEC. 19. Indonesian Olympic gold medallist Taufik Hidayat outsmashed China's Hong Chen 15-10, 15-11 on Sunday to retain his men's singles title at the Djarum Indonesia Open.

Both players demonstrated accurate net plays and exchanged first-set leads in front of about 6,000 spectators.

In the first set, Chen grabbed five-straight points and held a 10-8 lead before Hidayat stormed back with a series of smashes to level the score. The Indonesian then collected five consecutive points to win the set.

Hidayat controlled the second after surging to a 4-0 lead. But Chen wouldn't go quietly, levelling the score at 11-11. With cheering support from his home crowd, Hidayat dominated the rest of game, shutting the door with four straight points, and ending the match after about one hour of play.

In the women's singles, China's Xie Xingfang outclassed Eriko Hirose of Japan 11-8, 11-0.

Indonesia's Luluk Hadiyanto and Alven Yulianto defeated Fu Haifeng and Cai Yun of China, 15-8, 15-11 in the men's doubles competition.

Yang Wei and Zhang Jiewen defeated Zhang Dan and Zhang Yawen, 15-10, 15-5 in an all-Chinese final in the women's doubles.

Another Chinese pair, Zhang Jun and Gao Ling, defeated Robert Blair and Natalie Munt of England, 15-9, 15-9 to win the mixed doubles.

The tournament that began on Wednesday at Jakarta's Bung Karno Indoor Tennis Stadium featured a total of 294 badminton players from 16 countries.

Men: Singles: 4-Taufik Hidayat (Indo) bt Hong Chen (Chn) 15-10, 15-11. Doubles: 1-Luluk Hadiyanto & Alven Yulianto (Indo) bt 2-Fu Haifeng & Cai Yun (Chn) 15-8, 15-11.

Women: Singles: 2-Xie Xingfang (Chn) bt Eriko Hirose (Jpn) 11-8, 11-0. Doubles: 1-Yang Wei & Zhang Jiewen (Chn) bt 3-Zhang Dan & Zhang Yawen (Chn) 15-10, 15-5. Mixed doubles: 3-Zhang Jun & Gao Ling (Chn) bt 4-Robert Blair & Natalie Munt (Eng) 15-9, 15-9. — AP
