Cultural festival in Kannur begins on January 9

By Our Staff Reporter

KANNUR, DEC. 19. A week-long cultural event to highlight the heritage of Kannur as part of promoting tourism will begin here on January 9, 2005. The focus of the cultural extravaganza will be a range of themes relating to the history and legacy of Kannur, including folklore, handloom, football and heritage.

"The week-long `Kerala Maholsavam' will be a journey to the heritage of Kannur," the Tourism Minister, K.C. Venugopal, told reporters after attending a meeting of people's representatives and officials at the Collectorate here today to finalise the programmes of the fete. The festival is being organised as part of the Government's plan to identify and promote such festivals in each district to promote tourism, he said.

Apart from cultural events, an international seminar on `Indo-Portuguese cultural relations' and a seminar to explore the district's development potential would be held. The Governor, R.L. Bhatia, would open the seminar at the Kairali Heritage Resort at Kattampally, organised in association with the Institute for Research in Social Sciences and Humanities. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, will inaugurate the latter.

The festival also assumes significance as 2005 marks the 500th anniversary of St. Angelo Fort, which played an important role in the colonial history of the district, Mr. Venugopal said. Football and beach volleyball matches would be organised during the festival, he added.

Programme venues

The programmes have been planned at the different venues with a view to educating tourists on their historical legacy. The South Zone Cultural Centre, Tanjavore, West Zone Cultural Centre, Udaipur, Kerala Kalamandalam, Kerala Folklore Akademi and Kerala Cultural Centre would associate with the event. Photography and painting exhibitions would be organised at the Town Hall on all seven days of the festival.

There will be lecture series on history, tradition and glory in the fields of literature, folklore, journalism, sports and industry. Food festival, film festival, archaeology exhibition, painting competition would be held as part of the Kannur Maholsavam. The noted painter Mario Miranda of Goa would inaugurate the painting competition on the Muzhappilangad beach. Martial arts demonstrations would be conducted on Payyambalam beach. The Meenkunnu beach would also be a venue of a cultural event.
