Awana is fastest

Mumbai. Dec. 19. Eighteen-year-old Parvinder Awana won the ESPN presents Scorpio Speedster 2004 contest, organised by IMG, here on Saturday.

Aawan bowled at 138 kmph in the final round, which included Kolkata's Ashok Kumar Dinda and Abishekh Tamarkar. Raised in Midnapore, Dinda's best efforts came off the last two balls of the final; he bowled at 138 and 137 kmph.

Awana plays for National Cricket Coaching Centre in the Delhi super `A' division league. Awana was declared winner of the `The Hunt for India's Fastest bowler' contest. He received Rs. 75,000 plus a three-week trip to Queensland, where he will undergo training under former Australian Test bowler Damien Fleming.

Dinda received Rs. 25,000 and will accompany Awana on the trip to Australia. Dinda plays for Sporting Union in the Kolkata senior division league. Test cricketers Ashish Nehra and Ajit Agarkar were present during the final and Nalin Mehta, General Manager (Automotive) Mahindra & Mahindra, gave away the prizes. — Our Special Correspondent
