Significance of Paninian grammar unravelled

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI, DEC. 19. Speakers at the three-day national seminar on "The impact of Paninian grammar on other shastras'', conducted by Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha here, unravelled the various facets of the scholar Panini's work, in the process establishing its supremacy by being a guiding light to the other forms of grammar.

Delivering the valedictory address on Sunday, V.Vasudevan Potti, a recipient of President's Certificate of honour, gave a detailed account of the grammatical traditions in Sanskrit and the ability of one to influence the others. He also spoke on the applicability of grammar for the construction of ideas in other sastras.

V. Swaminathan, former principal of Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Kerala, said that `impact' in this context did not convey the original meaning of a word, but only the utility of Paninian grammar to other sastras. Renowned scholars V. Sreevatsankacharya, Seshachala Sarma and K.Satyanarayana were the other speakers.
