M.S., an irrevocable loss

Sir, _The demise of M. S. Subbulakshmi is an irrevocable loss to the world of Indian music. She was the greatest and a gifted exponent of Carnatic music. Her golden voice, in depth knowledge of music, great devotion, the perfect shruti and laya, clarity of diction and an unparalleled charm were traits that helped M.S. reach dizzy heights in the world of music. The sweetness in her voice and her rendition of kirtanas and bhajans has stirred millions across the world towards devotion. Bringing out the true essence of Indian culture and tradition, M.S. utilised the divine gift of her mellifluous voice to indulge in philanthropic activities, bringing the magnanimous persona in her to the fore.

M.S. may no longer be physically present amidst us but she would continue to rule the hearts of millions through the divine renditions that will remain immortal.

Singing national anthem

Sir, _Taking cue from other State Assemblies, the Andhra Pradesh State Assembly Speaker, K.R. Suresh Reddy, started the winter session by singing the national anthem. The move, beyond any doubt, is appreciable. The only hitch, however, is the apparent confusion among the elected representatives, with regard to the timing as to when the national anthem should be sung. The Centre and the State Government have instructed all educational institutions, business establishments and cinema theatres to start the day's with `Vandemataram' or `Maa Telugu Talliki' and end with the national anthem. Politicians, therefore, should practice what they preach to others.

Interest on

tax arrears

Sir, _The decision of the municipal corporations in Andhra Pradesh to levy yearly interest up to 24 per cent on property tax arrears is unfair.

The State Government should emulate the Delhi Municipal Corporation that extends a concession of 15 per cent to those who promptly pay their tax if it is paid in one go before the commencement of the year within a span of one year. Alternatively, the taxpayer could pay the amount in four quarterly instalments, but without discount. In the event of default, he would be liable to pay a penalty interest of one per cent on the defaulted amount till the full payment is made. The State Government can work out the same mode also.

Bad road

Sir, _The road leading to the APSRTC Kankipadu bus station is in a bad condition. The heavy rush of RTC buses and city services pose a grave threat to the pedestrians in the vicinity. It is unfortunate that despite its bad condition, the authorities concerned have not taken up any repair works. I request them to look into the issue.

Railway station

needs facelift

Sir, _The Kovvur railway station is in a state of neglect and needs urgent steps to give it a facelift. The place lacks minimum facilities subjecting people to untold miseries. Some of the steps required on a war footing include construction of sheds in some of the platforms and their illumination, raising the height of platform number two and three, improvement of enquiry services and implementation of a computerised reservation counter.

Maintaining decorum

Sir, _It has been claimed that India has joined the elite club of nations that telecast live their Parliamentary proceedings. But, looking at the telecast, one can see that politicians have reduced their status to mere laughing stock. With the members exercising their vocal chords as often as possible and grabbing every opportunity of rushing to the well of the House on trivial issues and breaking microphones, the viewers do not feel any dearth of entertainment.

It is time the elected representatives learnt how to maintain decorum in the House.
