RANCHI, DEC. 19. The Jharkhand government will undertake a centrally-sponsored Rs 1.5 crore project for conservation of elephants in the State. The major portion of the funds will be spent on measures to minimise man-elephant conflicts in districts of Dumka, Hazaribagh, Palamu, Ranchi and Singhbhum, according to forest department officials. Under the project a special training programme to minimise conflicts will be taken up in 30 elephant-affected villages. The inhabitants of the villages along with forest guards, foresters and rangers would be given training on the ways to drive out elephants and the security mesasures to be taken. Two elephants, trained to catch stray elephants, would also be brought from Assam to drive out the wild elphants from human habitation. Another scheme will also be implemented at a cost of Rs 70 lakhs to save elephants from frequent collision with running trains in Manoharpur of Jharkhand, the officials said. The state government is providing Rs 35 lakhs for fencing of the area and the Railways would provide another Rs 35 lakhs for the purpose, they added.
