SHIMLA, DEC. 19. Next time you feed a monkey or spit on the streets of this tourist hot spot, there is every chance of ending up paying a hefty fine. Feeding monkeys, or stray animals in public places coming under Shimla Municipal Corporation Area or spitting or throwing garbage on roads would be made a cognizable offence punishable with fine as per a notification issued by the local body. The notification was brought out following an ordinance issued by the government to amend the Himachal Municipal Corporation Act. A bill replacing the ordinance was likely to be introduced during the ongoing winter session of Himachal Vidhan Sabha to amend the 1994 act. The areas around the temples would not be covered under the definition of public place under the act and offenders would may have to pay a fine of upto Rs 500. The Shimla Municipal committee had made a provision for fine of Rs 50 for spitting on mall road in early fifties and the same was also being increased ten times to Rs 500 after nearly half a century. The Corporation has also amended the act to impose a fine of Rs 2000 on those who did not apply for sewage connections in the areas where sewage lines existed.
