PATHANAMTHITTA, DEC. 19. The authorities of the sanitation wing of the local self-government at Mallappally near Thiruvalla here are dumping waste close to the intake point of the Kerala Water Authority's drinking water supply scheme in river Pampa, near the Mallappally Bridge, it has been reported. The waste is collected even from meat and fish markets and nearby slaughterhouses. The Manimalayar Samrakshana Samithi general secretary, V. N. Gopinatha Pillai, has said the Samithi had been repeatedly complaining to the local tahasildar and the panchayat authorities on the health hazards posed by the heaping of wastes on the river banks. But, the authorities were yet to take any action. When it rains, the waste will reach the Upper Kuttanadtoo. Mr. Pillai, an executive committee member of the Kerala Nadee Samrakshana Samithi also, said the local body, which is supposed to check the river pollution, has taken no steps to check the flow of filth through various drainages leading to the Pampa. Mr. Pillai said memorandum has been submitted to the local body authorities and the Kerala State Pollution Control Board demanding urgent steps to contain the flow of filth into the Manimala river from the Kanjirapally, Manimala, Mundakkayam and Mallappally towns. But the authorities have not taken any action, he said.
