Minister inaugurates new school buildings

TIRUNELVELI, DEC. 19. The Minister for Industries, Nainar Nagendran, today inaugurated new school buildings constructed at a cost of Rs. 14.50 lakhs at Azad Corporation Primary School in Melapalayam today.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Nainar Nagendran said the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, had ordered for the replacement of all thatched-roof sheds in the schools by concrete buildings after the Kumbakonam fire tragedy claimed over 90 innocent lives. In pursuant to this directive, all makeshift structures in the government and corporation schools in Tirunelveli district were being transformed into permanent buildings.

"While the construction of classrooms at Kallanai Corporation Higher Secondary School is going on at an outlay of Rs. 1.50 crore, building of additional classrooms in the schools under the Muslim-dominant Melapalayam Zone of Tirunelveli Corporation has been taken up at a cost of Rs. 70.60 lakh," he said.

The minister also disbursed loans to the tune of Rs. 4.50 lakh to women self-help groups.

The Mayor, A. Jayarani, the Commissioner, D. Chandrasekaran, and others participated in the function.
