BCs seek separate ministry

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, DEC. 19. The Andhra Pradesh State Backward Classes Welfare Association and Madiga Non-Governmental Organisations Network of Andhra Pradesh have respectively approached the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and the AICC President, Sonia Gandhi, seeking a separate ministry for backward classes and enactment of a legislation for categorisation of the Scheduled Castes for benefits of reservation in educational, social economic and other spheres.

In a memorandum to the Prime Minister, R. Krishnaiah, president of the association said that creation of a separate ministry for backward classes would pave the way for economic, social and educational development of the neglected people in a focused manner.

The network in its representation to Ms. Gandhi said that enactment of legislation for categorisation of Scheduled Castes was now essential since the Supreme Court has nullified it saying that the State Legislature was not competent to do so.
