Delhi schoolboy held in phone sleaze case

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 19. The student of a reputed public school in South Delhi, who had allegedly filmed intimate moments with a girl on his camera phone and forwarded the clips to his friends through the multimedia messaging service (MMS), was detained by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi police today.

The detention comes two days after the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Baazee.com, Avnish Bajaj, was arrested for allegedly allowing sale of the explicit video clip on the auction site.

While the EOW had obtained a warrant against the schoolboy from a court two days ago, they detained him this evening as soon as he arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here from Kathmandu.

It has now come to light that while his parents were very much in the capital, he and his friend had left for Kathmandu a few days ago.

According to the police, it was only after verification of his involvement in the episode that they obtained a warrant against him and requested his parents to produce him for formal detention under the Juvenile Justice Act.

The police are now planning to question him to identify those to whom he had forwarded the MMS.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (EOW), Prabhakar, said: "We are taking all precautions for detention of a juvenile. The boy would be produced in a juvenile court on Monday."

Meanwhile, the police are trying to trace the person who had uploaded the video clip on the Local Area Network (LAN) at IIT-Kharagpur, from where its geophysics student, Ravi Raj, allegedly downloaded it and posted it for sale on Baazee.com for Rs. 125.

It is suspected that the first video clip uploaded on the IIT LAN had been sent through e-mail. In fact, Ravi had also sent it to eight buyers through e-mail attachment.

Earlier on Friday, the police arrested Avnish Bajaj, under the Information Technology Act. While he has been sent to judicial custody, the police are also examining the role of other officials of the e-business website. More arrests in the case are likely.
