THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 19. The Leader of the Opposition, V. S. Achuthanandan, has urged the Government to immediately reimburse the handling charges being incurred by cooperative societies engaged in procurement of paddy. In a statement here today, Mr. Achuthanandan said the Government owed the cooperatives Rs. 2.25 crores towards handling charge reimbursement despite having promised to pay 95 paise per kilo to them.
Paddy procurement
He alleged that the Government was also not giving any encouragement to the cooperatives to carry out paddy procurement. The Government had announced a procurement price of Rs. 8.30 a kilo for the `matta' variety and Rs. 7.50 a kilo for the white variety. At that time, the selling price of paddy was Rs. 6. The Government should have compensated the cooperatives for the losses incurred by them by procuring paddy at a higher price. But it had not done, he said.
