Paddy healthy in Pudukottai district

PUDUKOTTAI, DEC. 19. Paddy cultivation was taken up on 90,686 hectares in the district this year.

In the Cauvery Mettur Project (CMP) area, paddy cultivation was taken up on 7,540 hectares through direct sowing and 3,800 hectares through transplanting during the samba season. The crop is healthy.

In other areas irrigated through rain-fed tanks and wells, the cultivation of the crop was taken up on 26,214 hectares through direct sowing and 47,850 hectares through transplanting during the samba season. Millet was raised on 3,012 hectares, pulses on 7,262 hectares, sugarcane on 3,086 hectares and groundnut on 19,115 hectares. Gingely crop was raised on 2,118 hectares.

According to an official release, 886 tanks in the non-CMP areas had water for three months, 3,624 tanks for two months and 77 tanks for one month. In the CMP area, 12 tanks had irrigation water for three months, 651 tanks for two months and 12 tanks for one month.

The release said that to ensure availability of quality fertilizer and pesticides, 346 fertilizer and 390 pesticides samples were collected from private and cooperative outlets and sent for analysis. The results of 285 fertilizer and 294 pesticides samples have arrived. This year, 7,600 soil samples were collected to enable farmers to apply fertilizers according to the soil status.

The release further said that the Eriophyid Mite Control Scheme at an outlay of Rs.5.37 lakhs was under implementation to control the mite attack on 79,900 coconut trees in the district.

The extension functionaries of the Agriculture Department were involved in popularising the technology and demonstrating the methodology in the villages to educate the farmers to undertake proper plant protection measures.
