MANGALORE, DEC. 19. ``Development works will be carried out in Urva and Car Street markets in due course, and Car Street and Bhavanti Street will be expanded,'' Yogish Bhat, MLA, said here on Sunday. He was speaking after inaugurating a shed for head-load vendors of vegetables and fruits on the premises of central market. Mr. Bhat said the opening of the shed followed a meeting with the city corporation after several appeals had been made by the public to show concern over the plight of women vendors. "For a long time now, head-load vendors sitting out in the open have faced many problems, especially during the summer and the monsoon. We request them to make use of this shed,'' he said. Several main markets in the city would undergo changes eventually, he added. Mr. Bhat appreciated the step taken by the vendors' association to distribute fruits and vegetables to patients in Wenlock and Lady Goshen Hospitals. He encouraged them to carry out such activities in the future too. He requested the vendors to cooperate with one another, especially during the morning hours when loading and unloading of vegetables and fruits are carried out. He also assured them that all the problems related to fish markets will be solved in time. Referring to inadequate ventilation and absence of fans in the shed which has an asbestos roof, Mr. Bhat told the vendors that exhaust fans, ceiling fans and ventilation will be provided. The Mayor, Purandaradasa Kuloor, appealed to the public to buy vegetables and fruits from the central market rather than from vendors outside.
