Road in poor condition

Sir, — The stretch between Hampankatta Junction and Avery Junction (Falnir) is full of potholes and causing concern to motorists travelling on this road. Can the authorities concerned do the needful and solve this problem?

R. Kumar,

Mangalore.

Educate bus drivers

Sir, — The authorities concerned had put up a brightly coloured and adequately lit bus stop at Valencia a few months ago. But buses seldom stop at the bus stop and often stop near the Valencia Circle, which makes it very inconvenient and dangerous for other vehicles. It is time that the city corporation took action and educated the bus drivers on road manners. Mere possession of a driver's licence is not enough.

Shubha Venkatesh,

Mangalore.

Maintain standards

Sir, — Residents of Bangalore should be happy that the proactive work of Lokayukta N. Venkatachala who has investigated the substandard work in road maintenance and repair. A sufficiently thick top layer of asphalt and sand is crucial to prevent the formation of potholes. If the thickness is inadequate, the load from the tyres is not distributed to the ground evenly. This makes stones come lose and become the nucleus of a pothole.

The need to increase the thickness of the asphalt-sand layer was brought to the attention of a former chief engineer several years ago by this writer. His reply was that they were following the Central Public Works Department rules in this matter. If this were so, the CPWD was laying down the wrong specifications, or the chief engineer was unaware of the rules.

The first line of responsibility to maintain standards is that of the engineer supervising the work. He must be directly responsible for maintaining standards, and failure to do so should result in suitable punishment including dismissal from service.

Parking

on footpath

Sir, — The Mangalore City Corporation has constructed a beautiful concrete road from PVS Circle to Lady Hill. But it is unfortunate that two-wheelers are parked on the footpath outside Besant Complex, blocking the entire footpath and forcing pedestrians to walk on the road. Sufficient parking place is not available for vehicles on this road. Moreover, the footpath is also very narrow for the four-lane road. The Mayor and other corporators pass through this road every day. It is surprising that none of them have observed this and tried to find a solution to the problem.

J.F. D'Souza,

Mangalore.

Concession to

senior citizens

Sir, — Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. is issuing bills every two months. Previously the scheme allowed us to make 100 free calls each month. But now the bill has been split. If the calls made in one month are fewer than 100 and more than 100 in the next, BSNL still allows only 100 free calls per month in the bill.

The landline is essential for aged persons as many of them have some kind of ailment and need to keep in touch with their doctors and relatives. BSNL should give some concession to senior citizens.

A. Sama Rao,

Bangalore.
