Villages around Chennai in need of infrastructure

CHENNAI, DEC. 19. There have been more demands for the improvement of infrastructure at schools and health centres in several villages on the southern fringes of Chennai, T.R. Baalu, Union Surface Transport Minister and Member of Parliament from South Chennai, said on Saturday.

`Top priority'

Enrolment in schools in these villages has increased and they required additional classrooms, Mr. Baalu said. Mr. Baalu spoke to reporters after inaugurating development projects at 22 villages in the southern suburbs. "Infrastructure improvement in schools and health centres will be given priority," he said.

Fresh demands for additional classrooms, toilets, laboratories and boundary walls around schools have been received from Injambakkam, Semmancheri, Thorapakkam, Puzhithivakkam, Koilambakkam, Pallikaranai, Medavakkam and Madambakkam.

Besides, several localities have sought funds for construction of community halls, parks and playgrounds. Local authorities have been instructed to prepare estimates for the works, Mr. Baalu said .

Mr. Baalu inaugurated new school buildings, cement roads, community halls and other projects. The schemes cost Rs.1.5 crores. He also declared open several projects costing Rs. 85 lakhs, carried out with funds provided by the Tambaram MLA, M.A. Vaidyalingam.
