MADURAI, DEC.19. The Fish Immunology Centre at Lady Doak College has been granted Rs.10 lakhs by the University Grants Commission for undertaking research to develop immuno-stimulant for application in finfish aquaculture. The centre is pursuing the project in fish immunology, immunotoxicology and vaccinology. According to R. Dinakaran Michael, Director, the new project will involve a research on medicinal plants and developing stimulants to prevent diseases in finfish aquaculture. The loss of fish production owing to diseases can be prevented by this attempt, he said. Dr. Dinakaran said that though India is the second largest global producer of aquaculture products, which include finfish and shell fish, it lost substantial fish production owing to diseases. For disease management, emphasis should be laid on preventive measures such as vaccination and immuno stimulation. The use of stimulant elevated the immune mechanism against a wide variety of microbial diseases. The centre is attached to the post-graduate and research department of Zoology. The research will be carried out by Dr.Dinakaran, principal investigator. The Principal and head of Zoology department, Nirmala Jeyaraj, will be co-investigator.
