MADURAI, DEC.19. The Madurai Mahalir Thittam self-help groups got a brand name for their products `Madumathi'. It was launched by the Collector, D. Raajendiran, at a marketing workshop, organised jointly by the Women Development Corporation and the Nam Foundation, here on Wednesday. He also released a catalogue of the products made by the SHGs. The workshop was conducted to facilitate the groups to enhance their marketing skills and equip them to face marketing challenges. Accordingly, the common brand name would go a long way in helping them market their products with ease. There are 5,399 women SHGs comprising of 86,605 members functioning under 13 approved non-governmental organisations in the district. Of them, 4,675 groups are functioning in rural areas and 720 in urban areas, with a total savings of Rs.1820.31 lakhs. The groups have attended various training programmes to improve their knowledge, develop skills and attitude through learning experience. About 18,116 women members underwent the entrepreneurial development training, 680 skill training, 29 members were trained in skill upgrading and 4,755 in vocational programmes. A revolving fund of Rs.2.8 crores had so far been released to 982 groups and Rs.8.08 crores disbursed to 408 groups to encourage economic generation activities among them.
Assistance given
The Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar and Housing Developing Corporation provided an assistance of Rs.40.35 lakhs to 157 groups and Rs.2.09 crores to 80 groups for economic generation activities. Another 1160 groups were given Rs.6.70 crores under the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development linkage programme. The workshop focussed on bringing out quality products, labelling and packaging. The Mahalir Thittam proposed to purchase packing machines for SHG products, according to P. Renugadevi, Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam.
