TIRUCHI, DEC. 19 . A regional level buyer-seller fair for popularising the products manufactured by women self-help groups in Tiruchi and in the neighbouring districts will be organised here shortly, the Collector, V. Pandian, has said. Inaugurating the district-level buyer-seller meet, organised by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development and the Tiruchi District Central Cooperative Bank here on Saturday, he said that SHGs from Pudukottai, Perambalur, Karur and Thanjavur districts would showcase their products at the fair. The fair would come in handy for the SHGs to ascertain the needs of the consumers and modify their manufacturing techniques. He asked the SHGs to diversify their trade instead of confining themselves to micro-level activities like making soap, snacks, pickles etc. The District Rural Development Agency would encourage innovative activities like herbal cultivation on wasteland. A couple of groups had been assigned land in Pagalavadi near Thuraiyur and in Manikandam. The SHG members should improve the packaging techniques to improve the marketability of their products, he added. P. Selvaraj, Assistant General Manager, NABARD, said that the bank had sanctioned a sum of Rs. three lakhs for starting an exclusive Women Development Cell on the TDCCB premises, and two officials had been posted to interact between the banks and groups. The members should take maximum advantage of the Cell for credit linkage and availing other facilities. The Special Officer, TDCCB, R. Ambikeswaran, and the Project Officer, DRDA, Manohara Singh, spoke. Earlier, the Collector distributed loans to a tune of Rs. 7.77 lakhs to six SHGs.
