Vijayawada book festival from January 1

VIJAYAWADA, DEC. 19. The 16th Vijayawada Book Festival will be inaugurated by Gnanpeeth award winner, U. R. Anantha Murthy, on January 1.

Addressing a press conference the Vijayawada Book Festival Society president, R. Ramaswamy, and the secretary, D. Ashok Kumar, said here on Sunday that the book festival would be celebrated on the first 11 days of the New Year. Writers and literary stalwarts would be honoured at special programmes during the festival. The book festival venue at Swaraj Maidan has been christened after Raja Rameswara Rao of Vanapathi Estates and Orient Longman to honour him for his services to the publication industry in Andhra Pradesh.

The dais has been christened `Tripuraneni Gopichand Sahitya Vedika' to honour the noted writer.

Birth centenaries

The birth centenaries of Mulk Raj Anand, Nyapathi Raghava Rao, Malladi Ramakrishna Sastry and Duggirala Balaramakrishaiah, writers who were all born in 1905, would be celebrated. The Commissioner of Police, Vijayawada, Umesh Sharraf, would flag off the walk for books on January 4 and the Press Academy Chairman, D. Amar, would lead the procession. The Minister for Primary Education, N. Rajyalakshmi, would be the chief guest at the meeting to be held after the walk. In the 'Chirasmaraneeyulu' programme the life and achievements of M. N. Rao, the founder of EMESCO publishing house, and poet, Ajanta, would be highlighted.

The Minister for Higher Education, Pinnamaneni Venkateswara Rao, would be the chief guest of the valedictory on January 11. The former Governor of Karnataka and writer, V. S. Rama Devi, would preside over the meeting.
