Vijayawada
By Our Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA, DEC. 19. The Commissioner for Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy, D. R. Garg, has asked manufactures of Ayurvedic medical products to obtain the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) licence before December 31 or face the threat of closure by the department. Inaugurating a seminar on GMP organised by Herbal and Ayurvedic Manufacturers Association (HAMA) here on Sunday, Mr. Garg said manufacturers without licence would have to stop production. There would be no exemptions because the State Department was bound to implement the Central Government Act. The HAMA founder president, B. Nagaprasuna, welcomed the gathering and the secretary, D. Srinivas, presented the annual report. The manufacturers raised several doubts about the implementation of GMP, which required the manufacturers to have laboratories and appropriate machinery. They said traditions, which were 5,000 years old, could not be changed overnight. They asked the Commissioner to explore the possibility of implementing GMP in a phased manner.
