VIJAYAWADA, DEC. 19. The Vijayawada police busted a gang, which specialised in stealing valuables from the scooter dickeys and recovered Rs. 1.5 lakhs in cash from them on Sunday. A special team of the crime branch took four persons of the gang into custody. The gang is wanted in connection with 22 offences involving property worth Rs. 11.8 lakhs. According to the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime), N. V. Naidu, the persons taken into custody -- Rakesh Kumar, 32, Rajesh Kumar, 35, Ravinder Singh, 40 and Anand Singh 60, belonged to Moradabad, in Uttar Pradesh. They were nabbed near Benz Circle on a tip off. Information was given to the police by people who noticed them lurking around suspiciously.
Modus operandi
The modus operandi of the members was to wait outside banks for victims and follow them on a vehicle. They used to strike when the person stopped en route and steal the cash kept in the dickey, within seconds. Mr. Naidu said the crime circle inspector, G.V Prakash Rao, the sub-inspector, B. V. Krishna Rao and the constables -- R. Ramesh, Ch. Venkateswara Rao, Md. Shariff and J. Madhusudhana Rao, were able to arrest four of the six-member gang. The gang members reportedly said that 11 of them had come to Andhra Pradesh and had split up into two groups to cover a larger area.
