Four new meet records set

By Our Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA, DEC. 20. Four records were rewritten on day three of the ONGC-junior National athletics championships at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium here on Monday.

Setting them rolling was Mohd. Ujaid, who in the boys' under-18 shot put heaved the sphere to 17.78 metres, overhauling Saurav Vij's mark of 17.67 set at Kollam last year. The next record breaking effort was Shilpa Chauhan's in the girls' under-18 hammer throw, her 44.52 metre achievement eclipsing Suman Kumari's 44.18.

Harpreet Singh, in the boys' under-18 quarter-mile, lopped off 0.17 seconds from Appa Rao's mark of 48.66. The day's concluding highlight was Kavya Muthanna clearing the bar 2cm higher than K. Sangeetha's 1.65 metres.

The junior women's 400m race witnessed a keen tussle, with heats winner and international Pinky Parmanick striding away to the fore. With about 70m to go, Sherin Thomas took over. In the straight, Jasmin Joseph accelerated visibly and edged out Sherin, who tumbled at the tape.

Jasmin, a first year BA student of History at BCM, College, Kottayam, Kerala was pleased as punch with the sound start she got.

Save for the boys' under-18 section, the 4x100m relays for junior men, women and girls' under-18 were swept by Kerala, as the defending champion tightened its stranglehold on the event with growing supremacy.

The AFI suspended five more athletes for six months and G. Pulla Reddy of AP for two years, after finding them overaged. Serving the six-month ban will be Sudhir Kumar, Jagbir Singh (both Rajasthan), Chandan Kumar, Vishnu Kumar and Devender Kumar (all Bihar).
