Shimoga
By Our Special Correspondent
SHIMOGA, DEC. 20. Shantaveri Gopala Gowda Samajawadi Adhyayana Kendra Trust blocked vehicular traffic at Ayanur near Shimoga on Sunday by forming a human chain in protest against the repurchasing of land in the vicinity of Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary through a buy-back scheme by the Shimoga Wildlife Division of the Forest Department. At a protest meeting, the managing trustee of the organisation Kallur Megharaj said 68 villages should be excluded from the purview of the sanctuary as they did not have any geographical or natural identity as such. He called upon people to pressure the Government to include these villages in the category of general forests. The general secretary of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (Puttanniah Group), H.R. Basavarajappa, spoke. Nearly 1,000 farmers and farm labourers participated in the rasta roko. The Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary Buy-Back Opposition Action Committee was formed on the occasion. The former MLC G. Madappa and Mr. Basavarajappa were appointed honorary presidents of the committee. Mr. Megharaj is the working president.
