ISLAMABAD, DEC. 20. The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), an alliance of religious parties, announced on Monday plans to observe January 1 as a "national black day" in protest against the decision of the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, to continue as Army Chief. The announcement was made at a mass rally in Rawalpindi. Sunday's mobilisation was the third in a series of public meetings organised by the alliance to pressure Gen. Musharraf to give up his army job. Though the rally was organised a day after Gen. Musharraf declared that he has no intention of shedding his uniform, the MMA could mobilise less than 10,000 people. The organisers attributed the low turn-out to incessant rain and Government hurdles.
