ISLAMABAD, DEC. 20. The Pakistani President, Pervez Musharraf, told the visiting Iraqi Foreign Minister, Hoshyar Zebari, that Pakistan endorsed the Iraqi Government and the U.N. efforts to hold fair elections resulting in a representational national government with the participation of all communities. Mr. Zebari, who is on a three-day visit, exchanged views with Gen. Musharraf on Iraq and matters of bilateral interest. It is immediately not clear if the Iraqi Minister made any request for security assistance either in holding the proposed elections or stabilising situation. Gen. Musharraf told him that Pakistan fully supported the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of Iraq. He said Pakistan desired that the suffering of brotherly Iraqi people should end and that it supported free and fair elections to achieve the objective. "This was the only way to ensure an independent and prosperous Iraq in which all segments of society would live in peace and harmony." Mr. Zebari, who is on an official visit, informed Gen. Musharraf that elections would be held as per schedule. Mr. Zebari conveyed the greetings of the Iraqi President and Prime Minister to Gen. Musharraf. The Foreign Minister, Khurshid Kasuri, was present during the meeting. Later, he held talks with Mr. Kasuri. An official statement said the two sides discussed bilateral matters, regional and international issues. Mr. Kasuri expressed Pakistan's deep concern over the security situation in Iraq and hoped that the situation would soon return to normalcy. He said since April 2003, Pakistan had been stressing the need for maintaining the territorial integrity of Iraq. He said Pakistan supported U.N. efforts including Security Council resolution 1546, which aims at return of normalcy.
