MANAMA, DEC. 20. The summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) began here today to iron out differences impeding collective growth amid concerns about regional security after the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The summit began in the absence of Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz. Instead, his brother and Defence Minister Sultan Bin Abdul-Aziz, led its delegation. No reason has been given for Saudi Crown Prince's absence, but Riyadh has recently criticised host Bahrain for forging a bilateral free trade agreement with the U.S.
