MACAU (CHINA), DEC. 20. The Chinese President, Hu Jintao, urged Hong Kong's leader on Monday to learn from experience and do a better job running the former British colony, beset by political and economic troubles. Mr. Hu made his comments while meeting Mr. Tung and Hong Kong officials on the sidelines of celebrations for Macau's fifth anniversary under China's rule. He heaped praise on Macau's success under the ``one country, two systems'' formula, designed to give the former Portuguese colony a wide degree of autonomy. Hong Kong 60 km east of Macau used the same model when it returned to the mainland in 1997. ``You should summarise your experience, look for shortcomings and constantly raise your governance ability,'' Mr. Hu told Mr. Tung and his delegation. ``You should boost your unity and spirit of working together in the same boat.''
Room for improvement
When Mr. Tung returned to Hong Kong, reporters asked him whether Mr. Hu had reprimanded him. ``I hope I do not disappoint you again by telling you it was not a dressing down,'' Mr. Tung said. He told another reporter, ``Do I feel he was lecturing me? I do not think he had that intention.'' He said Mr. Hu affirmed his Government's efforts but that there was room for improvement. ``President Hu has recognised our work but at the same time he has said we have to be more united.'' In the past year and half, Hong Kong has seen massive protests demanding democratic reforms. Mr. Tung faced calls for his resignation. And the economy has been recovering from recession.
