ISTANBUL: A Turkish court is scheduled to open the trial of an Islamist militant extradited by Germany on charges of treason for allegedly masterminding a failed plot to crash an airplane into the mausoleum of the founder of secular Turkey. Turkish paramilitary police brought Metin Kaplan, dubbed the ``Caliph of Cologne'' by his supporters, to the court house in an armoured vehicle under tight security. Mr. Kaplan, flanked by paramilitary police, underwent medical check inside the court house before standing trial. Germany extradited Mr. Kaplan to Turkey in October. His group, the Caliphate State, which calls for the overthrow of Turkey's secular Government to replace it with an Islamist state, is outlawed in Germany. ``My client was not involved in any violence, he is only on trial because of the religious duty he has expressed,'' Mr. Kaplan's lawyer said before the trial. Mr. Kaplan's extradition became possible after Turkey abolished the death penalty in 2002. Turkey has introduced measures to crack down on torture to meet conditions for European Union membership.
