Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the editorial, `A broken promise' (Dec. 20). As pointed out, Somnath Chatterjee fulfils Jawharlal Nehru's definition of Speaker. One can sense his agony having to watch from his Chair members disrupt House proceedings under some pretext or the other. Even the respected Atal Bihari Vajpayee has joined the bandwagon. Where are the Hiren Mukherjees, Naushir Bharuchas, Sadhan Guptas, Srikantan Nairs, and the H.V. Kamaths?
G.M. Rama Rao,
Sir, Even if the Disruption of Proceedings of Parliament (Disentitlement of Allowances to Members) Bill becomes law, it may have no effect.
Velavartipati Vachaspati,
Sir, Mr. Chatterjee has been one of our most brilliant parliamentarians. It is sad to see him pleading to be heard. The live telecast of Parliament proceedings does not appear to have led to an improvement in decorum.
S.S. Rajagopalan,
Sir, If the Opposition is to be blamed, the ruling party members cannot escape responsibility. They behaved similarly when they were in the Opposition.
Yugal Joshi,
