PONDICHERRY, DEC. 20. Two constables of the Mudaliarpet police station Murugan and Irisappan were suspended today after a complaint that they had beaten up C. Sundaramoorthy (19), earlier in the day. Mr. Sundaramoorthy's relatives alleged that while he was standing outside his uncle's house in Olandai Keerapalayam in Mudaliarpet block this morning, the two constables, who were on their rounds, "suddenly" pounced on him and started beating him. Mr. Sundaramoorthy, an employee of a Government-sponsored farm research organisation at Iyyankuttipalayam, reportedly fell unconscious after the assault. He was rushed to a private nursing home in Mudaliarpet and was later admitted to the emergency ward in the Government General Hospital. The Superintendent of Police, S. Shanmughasundaram, told newsmen after visiting the victim at the hospital that the two constables had been suspended. He said an enquiry would be held into the incident. Mr. Sundaramoorthy's uncle has filed a complaint with the police alleging that police assaulted the youth without any reason. The former Home Minister of Pondicherry and senior Congress leader, P. Kannan, who visited Mr. Sundaramoorthy at the hospital, said the incident was a matter of serious concern. Mr. Kannan said that Mr. Sundaramoorthy's relatives were among his staunch followers and charged that the attack was an indirect "threat to him and to his followers" by the Government. However, he said he would not be cowed down by the attack.
Tension in Mudaliarpet
As soon as news of the attack spread, groups of young men picketed the Mudaliarpet road demanding action against the two constables. Tension prevailed for some time on Mudaliarpet road.
