BELLARY, DEC. 20. As many as 28 villagers from Halkundi, who staged a rasta roko in protest against a sponge iron unit causing pollution in their area, courted arrest on Monday. They were released later. The villagers, through a memorandum, have drawn the attention of the Chief Minister to the crop loss resulting from the pollution caused by the sponge iron unit. They alleged that the officials concerned had not initiated action to prevent pollution being caused by the unit. They demanded that the Government should direct the factory management to pay compensation to landowners, construct hospitals, including a veterinary one, besides taking steps to check pollution. The villagers have threatened to intensify their agitation if their demands are not met before December 28. They have also demanded that drought relief works be taken up in and around Halkundi where the post-monsoon rain had failed. They have urged the Deputy Commissioner to initiate steps to provide work for agricultural labourers, fodder for cattle besides giving compensation for crop loss. Shivashankar, Bheemanagowda, Hanumanthappa, Govind, Mallikarjun, Rajasab, Linganna, Pompapathi and Siddappa, among others, led the agitators.
