Governor to open medical camp
MAHABUBNAGAR: The Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, who is visiting Mahabubnagar on Tuesday, will inaugurate a free surgical camp for ortho-disabled persons at S.V.S. Hospital. He will also inaugurate the S.V.S. Medical College auditorium. According to officials, the Governor will proceed to M.B. Church where he will inaugurate a blood donation camp. In the evening, he will distribute loans to the members of women self-help groups at the Zilla Parishad mini stadium.
Ex gratia paid
ADILABAD: The district Collector, J. Sudha Rani, on Monday handed over a cheque worth Rs. 56,000 to the family members of Ulli Ramesh of Kadam mandal towards compensation received from the Indian Embassy, Dubai. Ramesh had died in Dubai while working there, according to an official press release here.
Assumes charge
CUDDAPAH: Smitha Sabarwal, an IAS Officer of the 2001 batch, assumed charge as Project Director of DRDA and Velugu on Monday. The Deputy Director of Social Welfare, R. Venugopala Rao, had been holding full additional charge till now. Ms. Sabarwal was the Madanapalle Sub-Collector prior to this posting.
Ryots lay siege
to sub-station
NELLORE: Irate farmers laid siege to the sub-station on Sunday evening in protest against non-supply of power to Ayyapareddipalem village of Kaligiri mandal for the last three days. Farmers said erratic power supply was affecting crops. They dispersed only after an assurance from the officials concerned to look into the issue.
Free eye camp
NELLORE: More than 150 persons were examined at the free eye camp conducted at Poodiparthi village of Venkatachalam mandal, on Sunday, under the auspices of Shivaji Youth Centre. Patients were given free medicines and spectacles. Thirty-two patients have been identified for surgeries.
Essay-writing
competition
NELLORE: Essay-writing competition will be held for high school students at the branch library of Atmakuru town on December 26 at 10 a.m. The topics are `The message of Swamy Vivekananda to the nation' and `Eradication of corruption'. Those interested should register their names before December 24.
Comedians back `Jalayagnam'
HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Youth Congress has roped in Telugu film comedians as part of its campaign to collect one crore signatures in support of `Jalayagnam' taken up by the Government to complete several irrigation projects. The comedians -- Brahmanandam, Dharmavarapu Subramanyam, Thanikella Bharani, M.S. Narayana, Ali and Gundu Hanumanta Rao -- after affixing signatures lauded the programme taken up by the Chief Minister. The proposal to link the Godavari and the Krishna would not only meet the needs of the irrigation sector, but also solve the drinking water problem, they said. The Youth Congress president and MLA, T. Venkata Rao, said collection of one crore signatures would be completed by January 26. Signatures of film personalities and people from different walks of life would also be taken, he added.
Paritala for court on Dec. 23
CUDDAPAH: The Telugu Desam Party MLA of Penugonda, Paritala Ravi, will appear in court in Pulivendula on December 23 when the defamation suit filed by Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, son of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, comes up for trial. Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy had filed the suit against Mr. Ravi on the latter's charge that he engineered attacks on TDP functionaries in Penugonda. Meanwhile, sources indicated that Mr. Ravi could possibly file an affidavit seeking shifting of trial to a court in Hyderabad claiming security hassles in visiting Pulivendula.
Woman weaver hangs self
KARIMNAGAR: A woman weaver, S. Laxmi (35), committed suicide by hanging to the ceiling due to financial problems at Lasmakkapalli in Veenavanka mandal on Monday. Her husband lost eyesight a year ago and she was running the family by working on the looms. Unable to eke out livelihood, she resorted to the extreme act.
8-year jail for two in dowry case
KARIMNAGAR: The Fast Track Court judge, S. Govardhan Reddy, on Monday convicted two persons to undergo rigorous imprisonment for eight years in a dowry death case. According to the Additional Public Prosecutor, V. Venkata Ramana Rao, Swapna (18) and K. Ramesh (23) of Dongathurti in Dharmaram mandal married on April 7, 2002. At the time of marriage the bride's father had given Rs. 2 lakhs in cash and gold ornaments and other articles. However, Ramesh along with his father, Lingaiah, and mother, Shantamma, began harassing Swapna demanding a motorcycle and a colour television. Unable to bear the torture, Swapna committed suicide by consuming pesticide and jumping into an agricultural well on September 11, 2003. The judge after examining 29 witnesses convicted Ramesh and Lingaiah. However, Shantamma was acquitted.
Suspension of 6 leaders revoked
HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee's Disciplinary Action Committee, which met under the chairmanship of S. Basavapunnaiah, on Monday recommended revocation of the suspension of six leaders, including two former MLAs. These leaders are: T. Appala Naidu and P. Balaraju, former MLAs, S.P. Neeraja Reddy, G. Ramdas Chowdhary, T. Chenchu Reddy and A. Viswanath Goud. Most of them had contested the last Assembly election as rebel candidates.
Attack on Morcha leader's house
NELLORE: Three persons sustained injuries when some culprits armed with lethal weapons allegedly raided the house of the town president of BJP Yuva Morcha, M. Suresh, at Venkatagiri Nagar on the outskirts of the town on Sunday night. Mr. Suresh was not present at the time of attack. However, three others, including his mother, were injured and admitted in a hospital. Following the incident security has been beefed up and a police picket posted.
Sarma Rao deposes before panel
HYDERABAD: V. Sarma Rao, former Commissioner of Social Welfare, who deposed on Monday before the B.K. Somasekhara Commission looking into the Yeleru land scam, sought copies of depositions made against him. While seeking time, Mr. Rao offered to produce documents in support of his defence. The judge agreed to grant time till next sitting of the commission. D. Lakshmipathi Rao, PA to the former Panchayat Raj Minister, also appeared before the judge.
NGRI renews deal with Satyam
HYDERABAD: The National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and Satyam Computers Services Limited have decided to extend their collaboration for providing IT solutions based on R&D of hydrocarbon exploration for another two years. The two organisations had entered into an MoU in December 2002. On Monday the NGRI Director, V.P. Dimri, and the vice-president, Satyam Computers, Rajul Asthana, signed the extension of the agreement till December 2006.
Protect cotton farmers: MP
HYDERABAD: The Rajya Sabha member of the CPI(M), P. Madhu, on Monday wrote to the Union Ministers -- Kamal Nath and Sharad Pawar -- seeking steps to protect the interest of cotton farmers in the State. In a letter to the Ministers, he said delayed payment after 21 days following the purchase by the Cotton Corporation of India was detrimental to farmers. Mr. Madhu suggested several measures to protect farmers, including 100 per cent purchase of available cotton in the markets daily. He wanted the Government to arrange payments within a week from the date of purchase and treat the gunny bag weight as 700 gm instead of 1,300 gm.
BCs seek 50 per cent seats
HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association organised a large demonstration here on Monday demanding 50 per cent reservations for BCs in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies. R. Krishnaiah, its president, charged the Centre with adopting `anti-BC' policies. He criticised political parties for seeking BC votes without empowering them. He sought allotment of Government land to shelterless poor of Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts and wanted action against `powerbrokers' for allegedly grabbing land in localities like Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills.
Dry weather to continue
Hyderabad: Weather was dry in the State on Monday with minimum temperatures rising once again. The lowest night temperature of 12 degree Celsius was recorded by Hyderabad, Medak and Ramagundam. The minimum temperatures, by and large, remained unchanged in Rayalaseema. Dry weather will continue on Tuesday, according to a forecast.
