Haryana
By Rajesh Ahuja
CHANDIGARH, DEC.20. Senior Congress leader and convener of the Manifesto Committee of the Haryana unit of the Congress, Birender Singh, asserted here today that his party would sweep the upcoming State Assembly elections in Haryana on February 3 and form the next Government. Refusing to speculate on the number of seats the party might win, he reiterated that nobody was being projected as the Chief Ministerial candidate as per the policy and past practice of the Congress. In an informal interaction with mediapersons, Mr.Singh, a former Haryana Minister and president of the Haryana unit of the Congress during the late 1980s and a strong contender for the Chief Ministerial gaddi, asserted that the elections were being fought unitedly and the media should not interpret otherwise if some leaders, including himself, could not be present at a party rally. Anyhow, all party men had now got in election mode and their sole focus was on winning the elections and throwing out the Chautala regime. Mr.Singh said the party's manifesto would be presented to the voters in a new shape, both content-wise and presentation-wise. Instead of dumping copies, the endeavour would be to highlight the salient features of the manifesto before the public through the electronic and print media. Launching a vitriolic attack on the Chautala Government, he said it had abjectly failed on all fronts and its much-touted education policy had rather spawned unemployment. The present State Government had also performed miserably in providing social and health services to the people. The people were groaning under the impact of the wrong policies of the regime and an atmosphere of lawlessness prevailed everywhere. It was proposed to ascertain the views of the public in the next couple of days before giving a final shape to the manifesto. Asked about the lack of representation given to the erstwhile Haryana Vikas Party leaders in the election process initiated by the party, he said that due representation would be given at appropriate forums including some smaller sub-groups which might be constituted shortly.
