MYSORE, DEC. 20. The All-India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) and the Karnataka State D. Ed. Students' Committee have jointly called for a Statewide bandh of D. Ed. colleges on Thursday seeking withdrawal of the compulsory six months internship introduced in the curriculum. Speaking to presspersons here today, the treasurer of AIDYO, Karnataka branch, K.V. Bhat, said that the bandh has been called to highlight the problems faced by the students while undergoing internship after the completion of the D. Ed. course. He said the programme has particularly affected a large number of poor students wishing to become teachers. He said that the internship has become a burden on the students as they have to raise resources on their own for transport and board and lodging. Besides, he said, several students are finding it difficult to secure internship in private schools as they (schools) are not interested in having interns. The situation of girl students is pathetic as they are expected to work in far-off places with inadequate infrastructure, Mr. Bhat said. Urging the Government to withdraw the internship, he said that the students are already undergoing a three-month practice teaching during the course.
