KOCHI, DEC. 20. The State Excise Department has intensified its vigil on smuggling of spirit into the State in view of the Christmas and New Year festive season. The department has pressed into service a dog trained to sniff out concealed alcoholic spirit. This is the first time in the country that a dog is being used to detect alcoholic spirit, said an official of the department on Monday night. Thousands of vehicles were checked since Sunday morning, said the official. Vehicle checks were carried out on Monday at different points along the National Highway like Karukutty, Aluva, Kalamassery, Edakochi and Panaghad, he said. Checks were also carried out at the Ernakulam South railway station On Sunday.
