KOCHI, DEC. 20. Consumers need to be aware of their rights and should exercise it, said former chairman of Kerala State Consumer Commission P.K. Shamsuddeen. He was speaking at an awareness campaign, jointly organised by National Foundation For Consumer Awareness and Studies (FOCAS-N) and Kerala Legal Metrology, at the Ernakulam Market today.
State-level drive
R. Sasidharan Pillai, Deputy Controller of Legal Metrology, who presided, said that the Legal Metrology has started a 5-day State-level drive to ensure correct weights and measures during the festival purchases. The department will conduct surprise checks on traders and will also take up complaints by the consumers, Mr. Pillai said. Complaints under the Ernakulam region can be registered at the local office (telephone: 2428761, 2428771, 2428772).
Complaints
At the awareness programme, officials of the Legal Metrology noted the complaints of consumers who were not satisfied with the measure of some of the items that were purchased. M. N. George, president of FOCAS-N, demonstrated the weighing of some items purchased from the local shops, in which some were found to be weighing less than what was described on its cover, while some items weighed slightly more than the prescribed weight.
