HYDERABAD, DEC. 20. A Flying Officer in the Indian Air Force, E.V.S. Raghavendra, who was returning home after a late night movie on Sunday night, died after his motorcycle skidded near Shoppers Stop at Begumpet. His friend, M. Chakrapani, a drilling engineer with British Gas Company, escaped with minor injuries. According to the Begumpet police, Raghavendra (22), who is based in Bangalore, had come for a vacation to the city. He was staying with Mr. Chakrapani at AG Colony, Borabanda. Last evening, they went to Anand Theatre on a Bajaj Pulsar bike (KA 04 EJ 1523). While returning, a scooterist took an abrupt right turn in front of Satyam City Centre. Mr. Raghavendra, who was reportedly driving fast, suddenly applied brakes due to which the vehicle skidded and bumped into the scooter. Due to the impact, both fell down and Mr. Raghavendra's head was smashed, though he was wearing a helmet. His friend rushed him to Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) where Mr. Raghavendra was declared brought dead.
No `ISI' mark
The police said the victim did not fasten the strap of the helmet. The headgear he was wearing had the logo of `Vega' brand, but did not have the `ISI' mark. After coming to know of the incident, the Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Tejdeep Kaur Menon enquired with the helmet company, which checked it and confirmed that the helmet was a fake. Ms. Menon said the helmet was purchased in Bangalore about two months ago.
Complaint lodged
Later, the Sales Officer of Vega, Guru Pratap, lodged a complaint with the Begumpet police stating that the company's logo was being misused. Ms. Menon said strict action would be initiated against those using logos of reputed companies and selling headgear. So far, the police seized over 440 duplicate helmets since the drive for compulsory helmets started.
