A New Year gift for Councillors

NEW DELHI, DEC. 20. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, which is facing a financial crisis and is not able to provide salaries to its employees on time and perform its various civic welfare schemes, will be distributing laptop computers to all its 134 Councillors on January 1.

"This is a New Year gift to our elected representatives. All the Councillors are requested to be present at the MCD House at 2 p.m. on January 1 to collect the laptop. We have chosen this date as it happens to be the birthday of our leader Ram Babu Sharma," announced the Leader of the House, Satbir Singh, at the MCD House meeting here today.

The promise to distribute laptops to Councillors was made by Mr. Sharma two years ago when he was the Standing Committee Chairman. Mr. Sharma is now the president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee.

Mr. Singh said since November the meeting allowance of Councillor has been increased from Rs. 150 to Rs. 300. "Telephone bill reimbursement has also has been increased," he said. He said efforts were on to increase the secretary allowance of the Councillors.

Earlier, the opposition BJP today staged a walk out protesting against alleged incident of rape of a student in a MCD school by a municipal employee.
