By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 20. Seven people allegedly involved in carjacking cases, including the one reported recently from near Indira Gandhi International Airport here, were arrested following an encounter with the Special Staff of the South-West Delhi police at Dwarka on Sunday. A stolen car, three country-made pistols and three live cartridges were recovered from them.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West Delhi), Deependra Pathak, Sub-Inspector Rajkumar of the Special Staff of the South-West Delhi police received a tip-off that a carjacker, Naresh Kashyap, and his accomplices would come to Dwarka to commit a crime on Sunday. Subsequently, he along with Sub-Inspector Ravinder Tyagi and others laid a trap and around 10-15 p.m. spotted a Tata Indica and a motorcycle in which the suspects were coming.

The police tried to intercept the vehicles upon which the culprits opened fire at them. In return, the police also fired three rounds and managed to overpower all the accused. They were identified as Naresh Kashyap, Manoj Kashyap, Sita Ram Yadav, Avinash Yadav, Praveen Dahiya, Rajesh Banjara and Narender Sharma. The car they were travelling in was found robbed from near the IGI Airport on November 13.

During interrogation, Naresh disclosed that he was involved in at least 17 cases of kidnapping, vehicle theft and other offences in Delhi and Haryana. He came in contact with a burglar, Zile, and started committing crime. In 1994, the police arrested him and Zile. Four years later, he was released from jail after which he started working as a driver. In 1999, he allegedly stole nine vehicles and was subsequently arrested.

Naresh disclosed that in May this year he along with his accomplices kidnapped a woman from Gurgaon to molest her, but were arrested by the police. During judicial custody, he came in contact with Manoj and Sita Ram, along with whom he started committing carjacking after being released on December 6.

The police said Sita Ram was involved in 22 criminal cases, including two murders. Manoj's father was a constable with the Uttar Pradesh police. However, he died in 1991 after which his mother also expired. The police are interrogating the accused to identify their other accomplices.
