Airbus sees huge potential
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE,
DEC. 21.
The Chief Commercial Officer of Airbus Industrie, John Leahy, today predicted that India had the potential to emerge as the second largest aircraft market in Asia after China.
The high ranking official from the European aircraft maker also projected the country would require 400 aircraft by 2019.
After signing a contract with the low cost carrier Air Deccan to sell 30 A320s here, Mr. Leahy said Airbus had doubled its projections for India, considering the proliferation of low cost airlines such as Air Deccan and Kingfisher and the expansion plans of Air India and Indian Airlines.
He said, "If you get to the rate of air traffic of that of other Asian carriers, naturally those carriers (Indian low cost) will double or triple its size.''
On Air India's plans to purchase 40 to 50 wide-bodied aircraft, Mr. Leahy said Airbus had been asked to submit the Request for Proposal and bids.
