Coffee growers demand special package

By Our Staff Correspondent

MADIKERI, DEC. 21. K.M. Nanaiah, Chairman of the Codagu Planters' Association, on Tuesday urged the State and Union governments to help coffee growers by implementing the special package proposal, which is before the Union Finance Ministry.

The crisis was so deep that since 2002, 22 growers in Kodagu, 20 in Hassan and 12 in Chikmaglur districts have committed suicide.

He told presspersons here that the coffee plantations have been earning valuable foreign exchange, giving employment to lakhs of people and paying taxes.

Mr. Nanaiah said his association along with the Karnataka Planters' Association (KPA) and the United Planters' Association of South India (UPASI) has been fighting for concessions from the Government.

The three associations have supported pollution control measures, pest control, rainwater harvesting and interaction with nodal agencies such as Coffee Board, he added.

The Rs. 39-crore package announced by the S.M. Krishna Government to provide relief to growers is yet to come through. Demands: Bose Mandanna, former vice-chairman of the Coffee Board, said the points incorporated in the special coffee package included interest on the special coffee term loan, providing loans at an interest rate of 7 per cent to growers, waiver of loans totalling to Rs. 33 crores availed by the coffee growers from the board, and a project to fight white stem borer disease.

C.M. Pemmaiah, former chairman of the Codagu Planters' Association, and K.P. Nanda Ganapathi, vice-chairman of the association, spoke.
