`Protect rural culture'

SHIMOGA Dec. 21. K.S. Puttannaiah, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha president, said on Tuesday that there was a need to promote rural culture, which faces a serious threat from modern innovations. He was the chief guest at the 12th death anniversary of N.D. Sundaresh, founder-secretary of the sangha, at Ashok Nagar here. Mr. Puttannaiah urged farmers to draw inspiration from the life of Sundaresh. H.R. Basavarajappa, general secretary; Pavitra Ramaiah, general secretary of the women's wing; K.M. Puttaswamy, vice-president; B.M. Chikkaswamy, treasurer; and Eeshanna, president of the district unit of the sangha, were present. Shobha Sundaresh, widow of Sundaresh, hoisted the flag on the occasion.

Workshop for artisans

Belgaum Dec. 21. To encourage skilled artisans in rural areas, a workshop in "Design and development in jute craft" will be organised at Khangaon in Gokak taluk from December 23. The 15-day workshop is being organised by the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts, Regional Design and Technology Development Project, Bangalore. According to official sources, 30 artisans will be trained in designing and development of jute based crafts.

Festival of Scouts and Guides

Madikeri Dec. 21. The 28th State-level Cubs and Bul Bul Festival of the Scouts and Guides will be held here from January 5 to 9, according to the president of the festival publicity committee, T.P. Ramesh. The organisers plan to invite the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to the function.

MLA `disillusioned' with Govt.

TUMKUR DEC. 21. B. Nanjamari, Tiptur MLA and Janata Dal (Secular) leader, has expressed his disillusionment over the performance of the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition Government. Mr. Nanjamari was inaugurating "Mahamane" at Muniyappaswamy Aladamarakshetra, Bagavalu, near here on Tuesday. The MLA said his expectations about the Government have been belied. When people at the function represented to him that Sarthavalli-Bagavalu Road is in bad condition, he said the Government has not released funds for development. MLAs are not given grants under the Local Area Development Scheme too. "I am scared of going around in my constituency because I cannot promise anything to anybody under this Government," he said. Guruparadeshikendra Swamiji of Keragodi Rangapura Mutt, V.L. Shivappa and S.P.Gangadharappa, former MLAs; B.C. Nagesh, BJP leader; and H.C. Shantaveeraiah, writer, spoke. The swamiji urged Mr. Nanjamari to get a community hall sanctioned for his mutt from the Government.

`Vaikunta Ekadashi' puja

TUMKUR DEC. 21. Special puja will be organised to deities at Venkateshwara Swamy Temple in Mahalakshmi Layout, Padmavathi Venkateshwara Swamy Temple in Jayanagar West, both here, Venkataramana Swamy Temple in Madhugiri, Venugopala Swamy Temple in Pavagada, and Lakshmi Venkateshwara Swamy Temple in C.N. Halli, in Tumkur district on Wednesday for "Vaikunta Ekadashi". Bangalore Sisters will present devotional music at Mahalakshmi Layout here on the occasion. The day-long cultural programmes organised at Madhugiri include music by Kikkeri Krishna Murthy, songs by Sneha Kalavrinda, dance by Pavan Kumar, bhajans by Saibaba Bhakta Mandali, Vasavi Mahila Mandali and Sharada Mandali.
