VADODARA, DEC. 21. Former India wicketkeeper-batsman Nayan Mongia on Tuesday announced his decision to retire from first class cricket after the current Ranji Trophy season. The 35-year-old Arjuna awardee, who has played 44 Tests, 140 one-day internationals and 158 first class matches during his two-decade-long cricketing career, sent in his letter of retirement to the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) secretary Kiran More last week hoping to retire on a high note at the end of the season. But, ironically, his hopes were shattered when his name was excluded from the 15-member Vadodara Ranji Trophy team. The veteran wicket-keeper, who made his Test debut against Sri Lanka at Lucknow in 1993-94, played 44 Tests and scored 1442 runs at an average of 24.04 with one century (152) and six half centuries. He took 99 catches behind the stumps and his last Test match was the historic 2000-2001 India-Australia tie at Kolkata. In ODIs, Mongia amassed 1272 runs in 140 matches at an average of 20.19 runs, and took 110 catches besides stumping 44 batsmen. He played his last ODI in the 1999-2000 Asia Cup against Pakistan in Dhaka. Having started his first class cricket career in 1989-1990, the former Vadodara Ranji captain, had so far played 158 matches to score 7736 runs, which included a dozen centuries and 45 half centuries. He also took 353 catches and had 43 stumpings.
