HYDERABAD, DEC. 21. The Bapuji Vignan Kendras launched recently would ultimately emerge as literary and information hubs to serve all sections of people in a mandal or village panchayat, the Minister for School Education, N. Rajyalaxmi, said here on Tuesday. Reviewing the measures being taken to set up more such kendras and to strengthen and popularise the existing 349 in the State with Adult Education officials, open schools, and grandhalaya samsthas, the Minister said though 189 kendras were opened on October 2 in the first phase, not many were aware of their role. Working on the lines of community learning centres, the kendras were set up by bringing continuing education centres, open schools and libraries under one umbrella.
Total literacy
She called for effective action plans to bring about coordination between the above three departments working towards total literacy. The three wings should share their resources and funds in running the vignan kendras and ensure active involvement of sarpanches and preraks. With literacy rate still remaining at 69 per cent, the kendras were expected to provide the impetus for accelerating the total literacy movement, she said. Saying funds were a problem with each kendra getting only Rs. 40,000, the Minister opined that officials should motivate people to donate. Ultimately the kendras would have computers, Internet facility and link-up with Edusat and would be a permanent asset in every mandal.
