MUMBAI, DEC. 21 . The Maharashtra Government today suspended the Additional Director General of Police, Rahul Gopal, who was arrested on Monday on corruption charges. The Deputy Chief Minister, R.R. Patil, who holds the Home portfolio, ordered the suspension after having a meeting with top police officers. He told presspersons that the order would be sent to the Centre for approval. Mr. Rahul Gopal has been booked under Sections 7 and 10 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. He has been accused of taking bribe from builders through a broker and close friend. He was Managing Director of the Maharashtra Police Housing Corporation. The arrest has shaken the police department that is struggling to salvage its prestige after the Telgi stamp scam in which several top police officers, including the former Police Commissioner of Mumbai, R.S. Sharma, were arrested. Mr. Patil said it was time to teach corrupt police and revenue officers a lesson, and the Anti-Corruption Bureau was directed to step up its drive. He denied that the case had tarnished the image of the police..
