Correction
CHENNAI,
DEC. 21.
In the news item, `Advocate jailed,' published in these columns on August 7 last, it has been inaccurately mentioned that the Supreme Court refused to stay the arrest of the former president of the Madras High Court Advocates Association, R. Karuppan, in a suo motu contempt of court case.
He was arrested by the city police on August 6 pursuant to an April 2004 order by a three-member Bench of the Madras High Court sentencing him to three-month simple imprisonment besides a fine of Rs. 1,000. The charge against him was that he distributed pamphlets on the High Court premises criticising some Judges.
The error is regretted.
